US and Mexican Presidents Discuss Economic Cooperation

silver and turquoise shopping smallerFor those of us who go to Ixtapan regularly, this headline means SHOPPING which is a bargain in Mexico. Weekend Tip from Ixtapan Spa: check locally for Mexican silver, stones, woodwork, ceramics, fine pewter- a good place is on line. Then when you shop in Taxco or a stroll away,in  Ixtapan de la Sal, you know what to pay. Most merchants no longer bargain, but prices change especially for silver.

A popular stop for our guests is Andre’s in Taxco, with items from $20-2000 (for vintage Frida type jewelry) When you take our excursion to Taxco, stop here for a panorama of what Mexico offers in silver and gems.

In coming months you will see more headlines about cooperation between our two countries.

Taxco to be the Next Big Mexico Destination

The government of Guerrero signed an agreement to publicize Taxco and other areas to American tourists. As a result, United Airlines and Aeromexico will both increase flights from US cities. If you wish to experience colonial Taxco before the rush, take one of our excursions; Ixtapan Spa offers a Taxco day for a pittance. You will safely wander the cobbled streets, buy bargain silver, and forage for baskets and woodwork, at theStreetZTaxco stalls on the town plaza. Taxco is the silver capital of Mexico, it is an UNESCO Heritage town, and it is only an hour from Ixtapan de la Sal.

Taxco Silver Capital of Mexico

Taxco Silver Capital of MexicoWhen you next come to Ixtapan Spa, definitely take the inexpensive day trip to the silver capital, Taxco. Upon arrival, first investigate the shops around the main plaza, then go in the old cathedral. Ask for the street on which is the Hotel Los Arcos built in 1602. The restaurant inside gets good reviews and the ambiance is lovely. Across the street is Emilia Castilla, fine silver ware from a famous silver family. Before you leave stop at Andres Fine Arts  a bit outside of town for the best silver in town, including Paloma type pieces, more Castillo, and some vintage ware.

Silver has gone up considerably world wide but Taxco is still the center of much manufacturing so prices can be  but are not always lower. The town is worth the visit even for non shoppers.

Shopping Deals in Ixtapan de la Sal

Ixtapan de la SalWe are a shopping paradise. A break from all that pampering and exercise at Ixtapan Spa Hotel and Golf Resort is a stroll into Ixtapan de la Sal, a historic center. Our village is welcoming to us spa-going-bargain-seeking Americans. We browse the street stalls and boutiques daily but . Saturday is the best day to shop.; avoid siesta time however.

The Museum of Modern Art Store is featuring many crafts sold in and around our area. Here are some of the items we bought in Ixtapan de la Sal for a fraction of the New York price:

$$$ The Dead of the Dead recycled clutch $10 in Ixtapan de la Sal.
$$$ Fun fanciful glass and material jewelry $10-15 Ixtapan de la Sal.
$$$ Wood is abundant, in this forested area. Personal favorites are pigs, armadillos and frogs carved into bowls $3 each.

Silver jewelry is sold all over town. Many guests treat themselves to new bling once here. The low Peso keeps the price of silver affordable.
