Cinco de Mayo was invented by the US/Mexican food and beverage industry in the 1960’s. It is celebrated in Mexico only in the lovely city of Puebla. The ‘holiday’ commemorates the 1862 victory of small Mexican force against French troops. The defeat of a well armed European army by the Mexicans remains a source of national pride. Mexico was ultimately conquered by The French and in 1864 Napoleon III named an Austrian nobleman, Maximilian head of a new Mexican Empire.
